The Seasons in Seattle

Approaching my 5th anniversary of living in Seattle, I have noticed a few things about the seasons here.

SPRING - January to early July
Spring starts in mid January in Seattle, a quick few weeks after the sun starts paying us more attention. The first thing you'll notice is the early bulbs begging to push out of the ground. The crocuses and garlic in my garden surprised me by coming out with their green shoots in early January before I returned home from my holiday trip. Next you'll see time the robins start to come out on the few sunny days. My birthday in mid-February is colored pink with Cherry Blossom blooms, and by mid-March we see Daffodils, Crocuses and Camellia outfitted in full show. Mossy sidewalks peak in later spring, with the right balance of heat and moisture.
Onward we go, surrounded by rainy days and increasingly green lushness, until we reach summer.

SUMMER - Mid July to August
Summer starts in mid July. It sneaks up on you, and one day out of no where you'll notice the rain is gone and the temperatures climb pleasantly into the 70s. Traditional Seattlites claim this happens annually on July 5th. Its hard for me to get too comfortable with summer, because at any moment I feel it might start raining. But it does not happen. Its drier that you would expect, considering the weather the rest of the year, and its important not to forget to water your garden. August is the most beautiful month. Its its warm, occasionally even hot, and not a cloud graces our sky.

AUTUMN - September to December
Summer classically ends on Labor day, as we prepare to enter the season of shortening days. This is a season of unpredictability for me. Sometimes its rain and gloom non-stop from equinox to solstice, and sometimes there is a gentle progression of neon leaf shows and crispy fall mornings that can lead us right into Thanksgiving.

WINTER - November to January
The season of Winter can vary from person to person, but in Seattle I will define it as the period of time in which you leave work in the dark, after the sun has set. For some this can begin with daylight-savings when we turn the clocks back. For me it starts later in November and lasts until just after the calendar turns to a new year. The solstice on December 20th is the shortest day of the year. Before it the sun drags its feet, and the shortening of days comes at a slower pace. But once the solstice passes the sun hurries to give us longer days, and a week after we have as much sunlight as we had over a month before.
It is worth noting that if it snows, no matter what time of year, the days there is snow on the ground can also be counted honorarily as winter.

New Paintings

So I'm not much of a painter, but the other day I finished reading Object of Beauty by Steve Martin, and felt inspired to break out the oils.
I blew the dust off my old paintbox and fished out my favorite painting tool, the pallet knife (cant get the hang of painting with a paintbrush), and made these three little guys.
On a side note, I also just saw a play written by Steven Martin, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, which I really liked and recommend.

My favorite painter is definitely Morandi, and I'm not hiding it.

Today I worked on the poster for the Vivian Girls show at Vera Project. It was my first poster at the Vera and I am having fun experimenting with colors. I'm happy that I got to do the Vivian Girls poster since some of the band members lived in new brunswick when I lived there (or all of them, im not sure). I only sort of knew them then, and I'm not sure if they knew me, but I definitely know them now since they are a pretty popular all-girls punk noise pop band.

In case you missed the first month of the Feathers and Treasures at Cakespy Gallery on Pine, you have another whole month to visit! Its now up through April 30th. The show fills the upstairs gallery.

There are a lot of brand new water color paintings for sale, and cabinet of curiosities on view!

Also in other news, I put up a sculptural installation at the Hideout (Boren and Madison).

Its made of plaster and light, and I am very excited to present it!

Here is a sneak peek picture.

a good cause

I was really happy to be asked (by my very lovely friend Leah Walker) to be a part of the 7th Annual Shrinky Dink Invitational Exhibition and Auction.

This event is put on every year by Zeitgeist Cafe in Seattle to raise money for the Seattle Young People's Project. There were some really awesome submissions by about 40 Seattle artists.
I was honored to have my piece be the highest bidding piece of the night on the LIVE AUCTION, and very happy to donate my work to a good cause. Now all I have to do is figure out how to work that magic when I'm selling my work myself!!

My camera was only semi-operational during the event (oh boy do I need a new camera) so all I have to present to you is this scan of my magical shrinky dink before it was framed.

This piece is called Tiny Tiny Art History, and its the third installation of what many of you are probably familiar with as tiny art history publications/zines that I've made over the years. In real life its in a gilded 4"x5" frame, accompanied by an image list.

About the work:

I've always been a bit of a naturalist, observing, investigating and collecting interesting things. Feathers are no exception. Their beauty and complexity is inspiring.

A lot of the feathers are drawn with reference to real feathers I've observed during my walks around town. City birds - pigeons, sea gulls, crows, sparrows - are such a part of everyday experiences for people in urban areas. The drawings are not meant to be a reference to a real thing, per say, but to call to attention the observation of urban wildlife that is part of our lives.

Most of these watercolor paintings are based at least in some part on a real feather. The colors veer much further from the truth than the forms do. Some of the original references are more obvious than others, like the peacock and hawk feathers. Some of the drawings look completely made up, but are actually just absolutely wild evolutionary adaptations, like as the King of Saxony Bird-of-Paradise head plumage.

The fine folks over at 20twenty want you to come help us celebrate our first time hosting an all-women’s art opening! This show combines eight incredible local female artists in one great big super-show. All of these ladies work in mediums across the board, but share one thing in common: They continuously inspire and never cease to amaze, in their craft, talent, styles, attitudes and life views. We are excited to show some of the most beautiful fiber art, soft sculpture, paintings and collages we’ve ever seen. And lucky us! The wonderful Shana Cleveland of The Curious Mystery will be playing some special tunes towards the end of the night!

I want to say a big THANKS to Lauren Testa and Laura Cali in Brooklyn for inviting me to participate in their show Perceptions of Character at Littlefield Gallery in Brooklyn NY, which closed this Sunday.
Although I can't say I had the pleasure of attending the show in person, the did a wonderful job curating and I looked GREAT from all the pictures!
I have to say they did a particularly good job choosing the image for the postcard! That's my painting! wooooooo!

Jess Rees is a Seattle based artist who is interested in exploring sense of place and self though installation, sculpture, and drawing.
